If you are ever down in Orlando, Florida or when you next visit, make sure you set aside a Friday evening to visit Mama’s Comedy Show. You will come away with your eyes red from the laughter tears and a pain in your sides. The show is a terrific, side-splitting, belly-aching improvised comedy act that has flourished because of the freshness, rawness and ‘adult’ nature of the material.
Mama’s Comedy Show runs in a theatre slap-bang on International Drive – Orlando’s main artery! The show is a big boys and girls version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway.” I am not kidding; this is one show in Orlando, home of Disney that, you just cannot take the kids. It is now one of Orlando’s top ‘to do’ things, if you are grown up, that is.
The show is based on audience suggestions so you never know what you are going to get. The performers improvise to create instantaneous crazy family situations. Each performance is about two hours long and has a number of skits.
You can be sure that everyone is completely different. Another given is the night will be hilarious and filled with loud laughter. I have to warn you though that you could wind up being part of the act and get your leg mercilessly pulled. Be prepared to put on a thick skin and laugh at yourself.
The shows are deliberately aimed at mature audiences and involve an ensemble of veteran comedic performers. They play an assortment of characters that are all related to one another through “Mama.” They are known as ‘The Family.’
The current crop of family members include Uncle Ed, Cousin Tony G., Cousin Todd, Cousin Ali, Cousin Matt, Cousin Gordon, Cousin Lisa, Cousin Jaimz, Cousin Mark, Cousin Kevin, Cousin Heather and Cousin Ryan. And Mama is a huge picture of a generously proportioned lady in the centre of the stage. The stage itself is set up as the interior of a home.
The shows are put on every Friday night and are generally sold out. While you can walk in I would strongly suggest you make a reservation if you want a seat in the place.
