SAK Comedy Lab, Orlando

SAK Comedy Lab, Orlando

If you are looking for a change from the usual dinner and movie or the bar and clubbing routine on a Friday evening then SAK’s Comedy Lab is just the ticket.  The opportunity to have a good belly laugh while downing a few beers and munching on snacks is time well spent and a whole different experience.

SAK’s is very conveniently located on Orange Avenue.  This is right in the middle of the Business District in downtown Orlando.   The entry ticket prices are definitely an attraction too as they are really low.  The theatre is relatively small and gives off a comfortable and friendly mood.

The comedy at SAK features a whole lot of styles while generally managing to stay out of the gutter, the toilet and above the waistline.  What I mean is that it can get naughty but not vulgar or gross.   In fact you will find families with kids in the place and a lot of humour is meant for them.  Late in the evening the humour cranks up and is aimed at the adults.

The distinctive flavour, though, that sets SAK’s apart from other comedy venues is their “improv.”  It involves a number of comedians on stage at the same time interacting with one another.  They pull in the audience a lot of times as part of their skits or make them the butt of their humour.  You never know which way the evening entertainment will go since nothing is scripted and it depends a lot on what material the comics can extract out of the audience.

While SAKs offers improve at its best they package it in rather loosely formatted segments.

Duel of Fools
This is where the comedians match their wits with quick-fire lines.  It is fast paced and involves the audience who then become the judges as the funny guys compete against each other.

Early Show
Getting away from the rather over used “late” show this is touted as being so late that it is early.  The sessions can be very mad and the hilarity levels very high.  The format allows the SAK comics to build absurd scenes and create characters and zany storylines that take them where they will.  It is rather reminiscent of “Whose Line is it Anyway.”

Slice of Life
This segment is audience targeted and driven.  You fill out a questionnaire in advance about your friends or family and provide some stories about them.  When you show up the SAK comedians will showcase the person (or people) you have written about.  They will make up funny sketches about incidents and situations based on information you provided. Guaranteed the memories and laughs will last a long time.

SAK Comedy Theatre is open 5 nights a week and has 3 shows on Fridays and Saturdays.
